Kauai Humane Society

Kaua'i Humane SocietyThe Kauai Humane Society is working to safely bring every pet to a loving home. Founded in 1952, KHS is the only open-intake animal shelter on Kauai, and their no-kill policy means they’ll never let a pet be euthanized for lack of space.

A.L.O.H.A. Transfer Program

KHS receives over 3,000 animals every year, but Kauai has a limit on residential homes that can accept pets, and there’s only so much space available to get animals adopted on the island. This shelter transfers over 800 animals to be re-homed on the mainland every year. However, since air travel is the only option, transferring pets is costly. You can sponsor a transfer pet, or adopt a pet friend on the mainland!

Programs and Services

KHS provides a wide variety of pet services and fun programs. They offer pet boarding, missing pet reports to help you find a lost pet, licenses and microchips, rehoming and animal control services, veterinary services, and so much more. One of their most unique provisions is a pet food bank, so economic struggles never have to cause a pet to go hungry.

If you’re looking to bring your pet with you to Kauai, KHS is close to the airport and happy to help with the direct release process. If you want your dogs to have a fun romp in the park with other pet pals, pick up a $5 day pass to the KHS dog park, complete with amenities such as water bowls, baby pools, water hoses, and trash receptacles.

When it comes to fun programs, KHS has no lack. In the summer, their Critter Camp allows children to enjoy playing games, bonding with the critters and other campers, and learning about the shelter and animal welfare.

Another exciting program is Field Trips for Shelter Dogs. After you schedule a pickup time, the KHS staff will match you with a furry friend, and you can head out on your adventure. There are a wide variety of beautiful places to take your dog for the day, from beaches to trails and paths. These field trips are not only enjoyable for people, but also a wonderful way to help shelter dogs enjoy exploring the outside world and socializing with people, perhaps even meeting a potential adopter while out and about.
